On an infill site in Vienna's 13th district, between Schönbrunn Palace and the ORF broadcasting centre on the Küniglberg, a new municipal housing development (Gemeindebau NEU) was built to a design by SIGS Bauplanung. BauCon International ZT was commissioned to carry out the structural design and detailing as well as the building physics design.
The building is a compact six-storey residential block with 62 apartments, an underground car park for cars and bicycles, and a retail unit for local shops on the ground floor. The design blends harmoniously with the existing municipal housing in the area, and great care was taken to integrate it sensitively into its surroundings.
Due to the confined site and the existing buildings located very close to it, the excavation support was built as a spaced bored pile retaining wall, which also serves as the external basement wall.
The upper floors were largely built from precast elements to meet the demanding construction schedule.
