WORLD-RECORD AERIAL TRAMWAY TO THE ZUGSPITZE, GERMANY

In December 2017, the new aerial tramway opened, running from the valley station at Lake Eibsee to the summit station on the Zugspitze at 2,962 m and replacing the old Eibsee cable car.

At almost 2,000 m, it overcomes the greatest difference in elevation of any single ropeway section in the world. The two cabins, each holding 120 people, significantly reduce waiting times.

The new Eibsee cable car has only one tower, which at 127 m is the world's tallest steel aerial tramway tower and the tallest ropeway tower in Europe.

With a length of 3,213 m, its span also currently holds the world record as the longest span.

Another particular challenge was the summit station, which cantilevers up to 35 m to the north.

From the first structural option study onwards, BCI produced the entire detailed design, including all calculations for the reinforced and prestressed concrete elements and – for the steel structure – the 3D design including shop drawings and NC data.

The transport capacities of the material ropeway and the site crane had to be taken into account throughout.
